A print-ready packaging file needs to work with the actual packaging structure, not just look good on screen. The final artwork should match the supplier-approved dieline and follow the required specifications for color, bleed, safe areas, fonts, image quality and special finishing.

Many packaging projects slow down during artwork preparation because the visual design is finished before the production details are confirmed. A beautiful design is not yet a production-ready file until it works with the actual size, structure, material and printing process.

Quick answer: A production-ready packaging artwork file should be built on the supplier-approved dieline and follow the printer's required file format, color, bleed, font, image and finishing specifications. Editable vector artwork such as AI, together with a print-ready PDF, is commonly preferred for many custom packaging projects.

Start With the Correct Packaging Dieline

The dieline is the structural template of the packaging. It can show cut lines, fold lines, glue areas, flaps, windows, perforations and, depending on the packaging format, sealing or overlap zones.

Your artwork should be placed on the final dieline supplied or approved by the packaging manufacturer. Avoid designing on a guessed template from the internet unless the structure and dimensions have already been confirmed.

Two boxes can look almost identical after assembly but use different flap lengths, glue positions, folding directions or locking methods. A small structural difference can move text, graphics or finishing areas into the wrong position.

If you do not have a dieline yet, it is useful to send the supplier:

  • The product dimensions
  • The desired finished packaging size
  • A reference photo or structure example
  • The product weight, where relevant
  • Any insert, window, zipper, handle or closure requirements

A high-resolution JPG may look clear on screen, but it is still a flattened image. The prepress team cannot easily adjust individual text, colors, foil areas, dieline elements or finishing layers.

For many projects, a useful artwork handover includes:

  • A print-ready PDF
  • A visual JPG or PNG preview
  • Any Pantone, printing or finishing instructions

Use CMYK or Confirmed Pantone Colors

Many packaging printing workflows use CMYK, which combines cyan, magenta, yellow and black inks. RGB is designed for screens and can display colors that standard printing processes may not reproduce in the same way.

If RGB artwork is converted only at the final stage, some bright blues, greens, oranges and highly saturated shades may shift noticeably.

Pantone spot colors can be useful when a brand needs tighter control over a particular color, such as a logo or large solid background. However, the final appearance still depends on the substrate, ink, coating and printing process.

A Pantone color printed on coated paper may not appear identical on kraft paper, textured paper, plastic film, clear labels or metallic materials. If color accuracy is important, confirm the color through an appropriate proof or physical sample before mass production.

Color note

A screen preview is useful for checking layout, spelling and general color direction. It should not be treated as the final printed color reference because screens, materials, inks, coatings, lighting and printing methods all affect appearance.

Add Bleed and Keep Important Content Inside the Safe Area

Bleed is the artwork that extends beyond the final cut line. It helps prevent visible unprinted edges if trimming shifts slightly during production.

The exact bleed requirement depends on the packaging format and supplier. Around 3 mm is a common working reference for many paper packaging projects, but labels, flexible packaging, sleeves and other formats may use different specifications. Always follow the dieline and prepress requirements provided for the actual project.

The safe area is the space inside cut or fold lines where important content should remain. Cutting, folding and converting processes have production tolerances, so important text placed too close to an edge can look uneven or become partially cut.

Keep critical elements away from trim lines, folds, glue areas, seams and closures, including:

  • Brand names and logos
  • Ingredients and directions
  • Barcodes and QR codes
  • Required product or regulatory information
  • Small icons and marks
  • Fine borders and decorative frames

Thin borders close to a cut edge can be particularly sensitive. Even a small trimming shift can make one side appear visually heavier than another.

Check Image Resolution, Fonts and Small Text

Image resolution

For many packaging print projects, around 300 DPI at final print size is a common working reference for raster images. The actual requirement can vary with the printing process, material, image type and viewing distance, so confirm the printer's prepress specification before finalizing the file.

Enlarging a small raster image inside the artwork file reduces its effective resolution and can cause softness or pixelation. Logos, icons and line drawings are usually better supplied as vectors where possible because vector artwork remains sharp at different sizes.

Fonts

Fonts should normally be outlined, embedded or otherwise packaged according to the printer's workflow. If a required font is missing, text may reflow, change appearance or fail to display correctly.

Keep an editable backup before converting text to outlines. Once text is outlined, later wording changes are more difficult.

Small text and thin lines

Very small text, light gray text, reversed white text and extremely thin lines may appear clear on screen but be harder to reproduce consistently in production. Suitable minimum sizes and line weights depend on the printing process, material, ink coverage and background.

When important product or regulatory information must be small, prioritize legibility, contrast and realistic production tolerances rather than relying only on how the artwork looks when zoomed in on screen.

Foil stamping, embossing, debossing, Spot UV, white ink, varnish, cut-outs, windows and other special processes should be clearly identified in the artwork according to the supplier's prepress requirements.

Separate layers may use names such as:

  • Gold Foil
  • Spot UV
  • Emboss
  • White Ink
  • Cut Line
  • Window

These areas are often represented with a clearly defined spot color or production layer so the prepress team can identify them. The color visible in the artwork file may only be a technical marker and does not necessarily represent the final foil or finishing color.

Very fine finishing details or effects placed directly on folds, seams or unstable edges should be reviewed with the supplier before production.

If multiple finishing processes require close registration, discuss realistic production tolerances before approving the artwork. A digital mockup can show perfect alignment, while physical production always involves some degree of process tolerance.

Review Every Panel in the Final Assembled Direction

Flat packaging artwork can be confusing. Some panels may appear upside down or rotated on the dieline because they will fold into the correct position after assembly.

Before approving the file, check:

  • Which panel is the front, back, top, bottom and side
  • The opening direction
  • The text orientation after folding
  • Whether important graphics cross folds or seams
  • Whether glue areas may cover any artwork
  • Whether the barcode remains appropriately positioned for scanning
  • Whether required information appears on the intended panel

It is useful to review both the flat dieline and an assembled mockup. The flat artwork is needed for technical checking, while a 3D view can help buyers, designers and non-technical team members understand how the design will appear after assembly.

A physical blank sample or printed sample becomes especially useful when the structure is unusual, the product fit is critical or the design crosses several panels.

Can I use Canva artwork for custom packaging printing?

Canva can be useful for concept development and visual design, but the exported artwork should still be checked against the final dieline and production requirements. Confirm dimensions, color settings, bleed, image quality, font handling and finishing areas before production.

What if I only have a JPG or PNG of my packaging design?
